Dead Period

The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) Dead Period is an important time set aside each summer to give student-athletes a well-deserved break. For 2025, OSSAA Dead Week will take place from June 28 through July 6.

Key Points About OSSAA Dead Week:

Duration and Timing:

The dead period lasts for nine days, occurring during the week of the 4th of July. It begins the weekend before and ends the weekend following or including the 4th.

Purpose:

OSSAA Dead Week is designed to give student-athletes time to rest and spend with family, free from school athletic obligations.

Restrictions:

  • No use of school athletic facilities. During Dead Week, secondary-level students (middle and high school) may not use school facilities, including weight rooms and gyms, for OSSAA-governed activities.

  • No coach-student contact. Coaches are prohibited from having any contact with students for coaching or instruction in OSSAA activities during this time.

  • No national tournaments. Participation in national tournaments is generally not allowed unless an exception is approved by OSSAA.

Violations:

Violating Dead Week guidelines can result in serious consequences, including a suspension of the coach or sponsor for the first half of the regular season in their sport.

Enjoy Your Break:

We hope all our student-athletes enjoy this time to rest, recharge, and celebrate the holiday safely. We look forward to seeing everyone back and ready to go after the break.
